The department arrested the gang leader after convincing him to board a flight that brought him to the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Justice arraigned Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia, the 76-year-old leader of the Mexico-based Sinaloa Cartel, last week on counts of drug trafficking, firearms offenses, and money laundering. El Mayo was first arrested in New Mexico on July 25 after department officials got the drug lord to board a plane that flew him from Mexico to the U.S. The gang leader was then transported from Texas to a federal court in Brooklyn, New York, where he is now facing 17 charges.
“El Mayo, the co-founder and leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, has been charged with overseeing a multi-billion-dollar conspiracy to flood American communities with narcotics, including deadly fentanyl,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland. “Now, El Mayo joins the many other Sinaloa Cartel leaders who have faced charges in an American courtroom for the immeasurable harm they have inflicted on families and communities across our country.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Attorney General Merrick Garland to seek God’s wisdom as he heads the Justice Department.
- For DOJ officials as they prosecute cartel leaders and other drug traffickers.
- For federal law enforcement in their efforts to slow the opioid crisis.
